So I know this game has been out for a little while now and actually has a sequel coming out pretty soon, but I picked it up when Steam was having their holiday sale for cheap and it's one of the best games I've played of late. The story is good, the combat system actually works, and there is excellent replayability. Some of you may know that I am not real keen on RPGs, generally disliking the genre, but Mass Effect seems to strike a balance between shooter and story-driven RPG that I actually enjoy. If you haven't played it, give it a shot, even if you don't normally like RPGs. I'm actually considering getting the sequel when it comes out now. Curiously, the Mass Effect series is published by Bioware, which also happened to publish the only other RPG I ever liked, Knights Of The Old Republic. Coincidence?

The sequel, Mass Effect 2, is supposed to be out in a couple of days. From what I hear, you can import the profile from the first game and the decisions you made in the original influence certain plot elements in the second.

Don't think anyone else here has been playing this game, but I picked up Mass Effect 2 and it was excellent as well. They fixed a lot of annoyances with the first one, like the inventory system, but revamped some of the controls so it takes a little while to get used to the new control scheme. Recommend it for anyone looking for a good action shooter with RPG elements.

Ugghggghghhh.... I am so jealous of you folks capable of affording the time to play an RPG. Summers are the greatest periods of my years where I try and make up for not gaming for weeks on end. School really does get in the way. If only I could make my dream happen MINUS the 3 more years of school I have! Hmmmm....

I've been playing through the first Mass Effect before I buy the sequel. I was explaining it to DJ the other day between classes and I came to realize, it really doesn't do anything well. What I mean by that is every element of the game is simplified compared to anything else out there you can find, whether it's the combat system, the space/planet exploration, the quest system, the character creation/rpg element, etc. Even the story (so far) is pretty basic. Yet somehow, the way everything comes together really makes up for the shortcomings the game has in each of the individual departments. From what you've seen of the sequel so far, did they revamp any of those elements or are they kinda more of the same?

Not sure, I've been meaning to get my hands on it for just a few moments to judge for myself. I just couldn't get into the gameplay of the first, maybe the second is revolutionary...
